Hi, and welcome to the Family Pets blog. Thanks for stopping by. We have always had a pet or pets in our home, I honestly don’t believe we would know what to do with out them. Over the years we have had many dogs and been adopted by the occasional stray cat. All of our animals are rescue animals. After all nobody loves you more than the one you give a second chance.
I am sure many of you recall the massive pet food recall in 2006 due to melamine contamination. During that time we lost three of our beloved dogs, two to kidney failure and one to liver cancer. Shortly thereafter we had two more dogs become ill, one with diabetes mellitus and the other developed a spindle cell cancer tumor.
Admittedly I have no solid evidence, but I firmly believe melamine contamination led to the deaths of our dogs.
The one thing every one of our pets that became ill had in common was their diet. With that thought in mind I began to research exactly what our dogs nutritional needs really were as well as the available foods.
What I found surprised and disappointed me. Like most pet owners I thought I was doing what was right and giving my pets everything they needed to be healthy but in reality they were being short-changed. I felt a strong need to share the information I have found with as many people as will listen and look for themselves. Some of the truths I will be sharing here are unpleasant and disturbing. If you are a pet lover please take the time to look at this information and please do not just take my word for it, do the research for yourself and your pet.
One last note. I am human and I do make the occasional error. If you read something on this blog that is not factual or you have information that counters a claim I have made here please be sure to share it. My goal here is to present the true facts as best as possible.
Thanks for your time and I look forward to many visits with you in the near future.

I am a student at Medill School of Journalism (Northwestern University) and writing a story about the growing popularity of organic pet foods.
While looking for experts who may contribute their knowledge and experience on the subject matter, I found your “Pet Food Economics” and thought your opinion would be a great addition for my story.
If you don’t mind, I would like to arrange a phone interview and hear your opinion on the subject. It will not last more than ten minutes.
The story is due Monday and I’d love to hear back from you before the deadline.
Best,
Sue
